The Therapeutic Yoga Training and Nursing

If you are a nurse working in a hospital, clinic, or private setting, looking for ways to bring comfort and care to your patients is a top priority. This fully accredited training has been used by nurses for more than ten years to expand their scope of knowledge. The Therapeutic Yoga Training provides nurses with tried-and-true healing tools that are immediately usable and effective. The training was designed from the outset to help bring yoga into clinical care settings and thus, attendance by nurses has been an essential part of the program's spirit from the very beginning.

Therapeutic Yoga is highly appropriate for those recovering from, or living with, injury or illness, and much time is spent discussing how to adapt poses for specific patient limitations that nurses are likely to encounter on the job. It provides a great opportunity to refresh your knowledge of anatomy, gain greater understanding of how to work with scar tissue and adhesions, and different ways to reduce stress levels. These topics are combined with supported yoga poses, gentle yoga, therapeutic touch, breathing techniques, and guided visualization to form one highly effective toolkit.

Examples of Therapeutic Yoga in action by nurses:

  • using guided imagery with a patient during a difficult procedure
  • propping a patient's body for comfort
  • using breathing techniques to reduce anxiety

In addition to providing ways to facilitate patient health and healing, the strategies taught in this training are also useful tools for self care, helping nurses to stay well as they serve the community.

To hear more about what the training can do for you, watch the short video of Deborah Matza, a registered nurse practicing in New York (to the upper right).

Cheri Clampett, ERYT-500, founder of the training, has worked extensively with cancer patients. For the last ten years Cheri has taught Therapeutic Yoga classes to patients at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, offering complementary care to patients as they traverse surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or whatever path of treatment they have chosen. As traditional medicine is opening its doors to ancient healing arts, and the benefits of these practices are being studied and validated in a medical context, there is a great opportunity to integrate medicine and the holistic healing that yoga has to offer.

Nursing Con tinuing Education Units - CEU's

The Therapeutic Yoga Training Program has been certified by the California Board of Registered Nursing  as a continuing education provider for over ten years. The training counts for 21.5 contact hours for the CBRN. The regulations for CEUs vary by state, so check with your state's nursing board to see if CBRN certified units are acceptable. For our New York trainings we register with the AACN (American Association of Critical Care Nursing) for 35 CEU hours. If you would like to take the training in a location besides New York and need AACN credits, let us know and we will undertake the registration for that training (45 days advance notice required).
